Korea's 19th presidential election
Official campaigning for Korea's 19th presidential race has finally kicked off. With the early election taking place on the heels of former president Park Geun-hye's impeachment, public interest has been exceedingly high. Reflecting this sentiment, a recent poll shows nine out of ten voters said they would be certain to cast their ballots on May 9. Global media have also been closely following the race, examining the personal backgrounds of the candidates and dissecting their campaign pledges as well. Who will come out the final winner?

Campaign promises and tasks ahead
A record number of 15 candidates have thrown their hats into the ring for the upcoming election. Some of the issues at the forefront of the race have been job creation, welfare, and political reforms, but in light of heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, national security has taken center stage. Candidates have been heavily focused on portraying themselves as the most trustworthy commander-in-chief. Other issues that are also drawing attention include the THAAD deployment, the sexual slavery agreement with Japan, and the potential reopening of the inter-Korean Kaesong Industrial Complex.
